Richard, I would like to join you on one (or two) of your trips to the Bishop area. I have a tent trailer that sleeps four that I could bring up and use at the campground. I can be reached at 661-810-4249 cell or 661-287-9224 home. Looking forward to the trip.

I will be traveling to the Eastern Sierra Nevada area to shoot the fall foliage as many as three weekends in a row and want to extend an invitation to all who may be interested. Assuming that the leaves begin turning by the last weekend of September, and that weather conditions allow, i.e., no exhorbitant rain and/or wind, I will probably travel to the area for three consecutive weekends.

I plan on shooting in the area extending from Bishop in the south, to as far north as the Virginia Lakes. The vast majority of the shooting can be driven to, with no serious hiking with the possible exception of the Little Lakes Valley, which is certainly not strenuous. Depending on conditions of the leaves and weather, among the areas I may photograph include Bishop Creek, the Little Lakes Valley, Convict Lake, the June Lake Loop, Mono Lake, Lee Vining Creek, the Lundy Lake area, the Virginia Lakes and Bodie.

In the past I've used accommodations in the Bishop area ranging from camping to hotels. Last year I car camped at Brown's Camptown, a large facility on the southern edge of the city of Bishop. Brown's offers camping on grassy areas, similar to pitching a tent in a back yard. They have clean bathrooms and shower facilities (showers are $2). They charge $20 for a campsite, which will accommodate a group. The local hotels are at best 3 star. If my wife accompanys me for one of the weekends, she and I are more likely to stay at a hotel, but otherwise my tentative plan is to stay at the campground. I have extra tents and sleeping pads which can be borrowed if you are interested in camping.

The foliage turns color first at the highest altitudes, and works it way down. The highest places are just over 10,000 feet, with the lower areas at approximately 6,000 feet. I will be checking numerous websites starting the week of September 17 that monitor the progress of the color of the leaves.

Fall in the Eastern Sierras is simply my favorite place and time to photograph. In addition to the fall foliage, Bodie and Mono Lake offer incredible photo opportunities in the area. If you are interested in accompanying me, or simply coordinating with me, please e-mail me at richardrussell-1@ca.rr.com. If you have any questions please feel free to call me at (323) 932-3597 - work, (818) 399-5392 - cell, or (661) 254-5415- home.
